Sage R8 Core Fast Action Fly Rod
The R8 CORE is about that idyllic day on the water when we’re thinking less and in the zone of the moment. It’s not a race or a competition, but a state we all aim to reach out on the water. The R8 CORE series features a proprietary graphite with two new axial fibers to improve efficiency and accentuate hoop strength. Sage has successfully engineered a fast action fly rod that flexes a little deeper and generates more line speed allowing for what Sage describes as an Amplified Two-Way Feedback Loop. These fast action rods allow anglers to feel the connection to apply the appropriate pressure to fish and give the angler complete control!

A Slower Sage
I was somewhat surprised by the Sage R8. Owning many Sage rods and fishing my Sage Sonic week in and week out, I expected the Sage R8 to be similar to the similarly named Audi R8: fast, with endless power. The Sonic is more appropriate for that description. What I found from my 8'6 5 weight R8 was tons of feel in a pleasant medium-fast action package. The feel on the R8 cannot be overstated- I have never cast a rod this sensitive. I felt this rod was less versatile than some of the faster action rods from Sage, but it casts a size 20 dry fly 45' like few rods can. It is extremely delicate, more similar to the Sage LL than to a Sage X or Sage One. If you're looking for the slower side of fast action, and are more interested in delicate dries or smaller nymphs than chucking meat, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better rod than the R8.
